2021-22 Return to Play

The GTHL has developed a preliminary return to play plan for the upcoming 2021-22 season, structured around the best-case scenario for a fall 2021 start. The 2021-22 Return to Play plan, while developed with space to remain flexible and with the ability to adapt, is contingent upon provincial, public health, and municipality guidelines and restrictions that may be in place as the safety of our players is the highest priority.

PREP SESSIONS

The GTHL will be responsible for booking, administrating, and executing PREP sessions for U10 to U11 competitive levels. Players should register for sessions based on the tryout level they intend to participate in. PREP sessions are not mandatory to participate in to play in the GTHL. Pre-registration is required to ensure the GTHL can adhere to any public health guidelines.

OCTOBER TOURNAMENTS

Tournament participation will begin as of October 8 for all levels of competition. Competitive tournaments from October 8 to October 31 will count as preseason.

GAME PLAN 2.0

The GTHL Game Plan, which includes the health and safety protocols, will be modified to help House Leagues and competitive clubs prepare for the start of the 2021-22 season. The release of the Game Plan 2.0 will take into account health and safety guidelines as the start of the season approaches.

COMPETITIVE PLAYOFFS

  • A tie in any playoff positioning will be broken using GTHL tiebreaker rules.
  • The structure for all groups will use a round robin format based on the number of teams qualifying. All match-ups are single game playoffs that can end in ties.
  • The round robin shall determine the final four qualifying teams. A single game format with overtime will take place in the semi-finals and final.
  • Teams should be prepared for round robin formats to utilize a tournament style schedule. For example, a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday schedule may be used.
  • Based on timelines to declare champions for HC, OHF, and OHL Cup championships, a full round robin may not be possible in the playoffs. Some groups may be placed into divisions based on seeding and others may be able to play a full round robin.
  • All GTHL contracted ice shall be set aside to ensure the regular season and playoffs are completed. The Clancy and Founders tournaments will not operate in 2021-2022.

COACHING STANDARDS

  • The GTHL is awaiting Hockey Canada and the Ontario Hockey Federation to finalize requirements and delivery of the coaching program.
  • The core trainings will remain the same and changes will not affect coaches who have once taken a core training (i.e.: D1, Coach Level 1 or 2).
  • The League will prepare to deliver virtual Coach 1, Coach 2, Development 1, and (OHF) High Performance 1 clinics for the new coaches. Due to the current circumstances in Ontario, for the 2021-22 season the GTHL will prepare to operate clinics virtually until in-person clinics are possible without restrictions.
  • D1 coach evaluations will be virtual and in-person, depending on the circumstances, for those who require a certified status.
