Around the G: Nov. 3-5

There are few undefeated teams left, but these squads are determined to stay in the win column. Wins, losses, and some surprises in the latest from around the G.

Minor Bantam AA
After finishing first in the regular season and going on to win the city championship, the Vaughan Rangers (12-1-0) have continued to display their dominance into the 2017-18 season. The Rangers extended their winning streak to four on Sunday after a victory over the Streetsville Tigers (3-8-1). The Rangers, however, will need to keep up the pace if they want to fend off the second place Vaughan Panthers (11-1-1). The Panthers sit one point behind the Rangers after winning their fifth straight on Sunday.

The first place Leaside Flames (12-0-0) managed to stay undefeated over the weekend after a win over the Goulding Park Rangers (7-6-1).  After defeating the Flames in the second round of the 2016-17 Scotiabank GTHL Playoffs, the Ted Reeve Thunder (9-1-2) sit four points back of the first place Flames. The Thunder and Flames will meet on November 23 at Leaside Memorial.

Other finals from Minor Bantam AA weekend action:

West – West Mall Lightning 5, Mississauga North Stars 3
West – Humber Valley Sharks 6, Humberview Huskies 1

East – North Toronto 3, Toronto Aeros 3
East – Willowdale Blackhawks 0, Markham Islanders 2

Minor Bantam AAA
As the reigning regular season and playoff champions, the Jr. Canadiens (12-0-0) have continued their winning ways into their Minor Bantam season, remaining undefeated after a weekend win over the Mississauga Senators (5-4-3). The Jr. Canadiens will be put to the ultimate test when they face the second place Toronto Titans (10-2-0) on December 3. The Titans have won three of their last four, including a 6-0 victory over the Toronto Red Wings (3-8-2) over the weekend.

Other finals from Minor Bantam AAA weekend action:

Toronto Marlboros 4, Toronto Red Wings 1
North York Rangers 3, Toronto Marlboros 6

Minor Midget A

A second round playoff exit last season has motivated the Leaside Flames (12-1-1) enough to burn up the standings. The Flames, who lost their first game of the season on October 31, rebounded this weekend with a 4-1 victory over the Toronto Shamrocks (3-9-2). After a slow start, reigning regular season champs, York Mills (8-4-1), won their third straight game on Saturday. They now sit eight points back of the first place Flames with a game in hand.

Swept in the second round of the Scotiabank GTHL Playoffs in 2016-17, the first place Toronto Wolverines (9-2-2) are still struggling against the reigning city champions, the Avalanche (9-2-1). Rebounding from a loss, the Avalanche defeated the Wolverines 5-2 on Saturday to sit one point back of first with a game in hand. Teams should also be keeping an eye on the third place Humber Valley Sharks (6-1-4) who haven’t lost a game since early October.

Other finals from Minor Midget A weekend action:

West – Toronto Eagles 2, Vaughan Rangers 4
West – Duffield Devils 3, Vaughan Panthers 3

East – Markham Islanders 0, Willowdale Blackhawks 4
East – North York Knights 2, Toronto Shamrocks 8
