2016 Canadian Tire Cup recap

A weekend celebration of house league hockey culminated Sunday with a dozen teams crowned Canadian Tire Cup champions. A total of 107 teams competed in 185 games during the three-day event, including 12 championship contests at Scotiabank Pond.

MINOR PEEWEE

FRANK DIVISION
Warren Park Black
posted a 2-0-1 record in the preliminary round to finish atop Pool 2 and clinch a spot in the final against Cooksville 062 (3-0-0), winners of Pool 1. Warren Park earned its third shutout of the tournament in the championship game, blanking Cooksville 1-0 to win gold.

CANVAS DIVISION
The Erindale Spitfires 062 (2-1-0) and Warren Park White (3-0-0) clinched first place in their respective pools before defeating the Port Credit Storm (3-0-0) and Vaughan Royal Blue (2-1-0) – top two teams from Pool 1 – in the semifinals, respectively. Warren Park closed the tournament with its fifth consecutive shutout, a 5-0 victory over Erindale to capture the gold medal.

CANADIAN TIRE DIVISION
After finishing first in the four-team division with a 2-0-1 preliminary round record, Don Mills White faced the No. 2-ranked Hillcrest Village Black (1-1-1) in the final. As they did in their first matchup of the tournament, Don Mills held Hillcrest to one goal in the championship, earning a 9-1 victory to clinch the gold medal.

JUMPSTART DIVISION
This championship game also featured the top two teams from the preliminary round – the West Mall Lightning Beast (3-0-0) and Faustina Red (2-1-0). This time, however, the underdogs avenged an earlier defeat. After falling 5-3 to West Mall in their tournament-opener, Faustina rebounded with three consecutive victories, including a 4-3 triumph over the Beast in the final.

Championship: Faustina Red 4, West Mall Lightning Beast 3

MASTERCRAFT DIVISION
The Meadowvale Hawks 071 and West Hill Red 030 both finished the preliminary round with 2-1-0 records, but the Hawks earned a berth in the final by virtue of winning their head-to-head contest, 5-1 to open the tournament. Meadowvale faced Applewood 071 (3-0-0) in the final, doubling up on the Pool 2 winners for a 4-2 victory to clinch the gold medal.

MAXIMUM DIVISION
The semifinals of this division featured three pool winners – Faustina White (3-0-0), Faustina Blue (3-0-0) and TCHL Red (2-0-1) – and Don Mills Civitan Red (2-1-0), the team with the fourth-best record through the preliminary round. Pool 3 champions Faustina White cruised to an 8-2 win over Don Mills, while TCHL Red won the other semifinal, 2-1 over Faustina Blue. Facing their toughest test of the tournament, Faustina White capped a perfect record with a 2-1 victory over TCHL Red in the championship game.

MOTOMASTER DIVISION
The Streetsville Bruins (3-0-0) and Scarborough Sabres (2-0-1) met in Sunday’s championship game after finishing atop their respective pools through the preliminary round. The Bruins completed their perfect gold-medal run with a 4-2 decision in the final.

Championship: Streetsville Bruins 4, Scarborough Sabres 2

NOMA DIVISION
The 16-team NOMA Division, the largest group in the Canadian Tire Cup, saw the winner of each pool advance to the medal round. The semifinals were played simultaneously at Scotiabank Pond, with Don Mills Teal (3-0-0) earning a 4-1 win over Vic Village (2-1-0) and the West Mall Stingrays (3-0-0) posting a 3-0 shutout against the SHA Stars (3-0-0). Don Mills edged West Mall by a 2-1 margin in the championship game.

Championship: Don Mills Teal 2, West Mall Stingrays 1

REFLEX DIVISION
The Erindale Spitfires 071 capped a perfect 4-0-0 preliminary round with a 2-0 victory over West Hill Green 057 on Sunday morning, their eventual opponent in the championship game. The rematch played out much like the first meeting, as Erindale earned a 1-0 win to claim the gold medal.

Championship: Erindale Spitfires 071 1, West Hill Green 057 0

SIMONIZ DIVISION
The Scarborough Leafs (2-0-1) and Scarborough Blue Jackets (2-0-1) narrowly won goal differential tiebreakers to clinch first place in their respective divisions. However, the Streetsville Canadians (3-0-0) and Meadowvale Hawks 062 (3-0-0) – winners of Pool 2 and Pool 3, respectively – defeated the Leafs and Blue Jackets in the semifinals to set up a championship game between two undefeated clubs. Meadowvale clinched the gold medal with a 5-2 win.

Championship: Meadowvale Hawks 062 5, Streetsville Canadians 2

WOODS DIVISION
Pool winners Port Credit 072 (3-0-0) and Meadowvale 073 (3-0-0) skated to semifinal victories over the Cooksville Phantoms 071 (2-1-0) and Erindale Spitfires 073 (1-0-2), respectively, to set up a championship game between two undefeated clubs. Meadowvale emerged with a 5-2 win in the final to capture the gold medal.

Championship: Meadowvale 073 5, Port Credit 072 2

YARDWORKS DIVISION
Clarkson Team 071 and Port Credit 073 met in Sunday’s championship game after both cruising to first-place finishes in their respective pools. Each club won three games in the preliminary round as they combined to outscore opponents 34-3 (Port Credit: 19-2; Clarkson: 15-1). Clarkson won the heavyweight tilt in the final, picking up a 6-0 victory to win the gold medal.

Championship: Clarkson Team 071 6, Port Credit 073 PW 0
